Don’t these look gorgeous?
I know I’ve written about celebration cakes before, but it’s a question that comes up a lot – where to find a gluten free (wheat free, or dairy free) wedding cake, christening cake, birthday cakes …
Yes, you can make them yourself (and there’s a fantastic recipe for a vodka and cranberry fruit cake here) but just sometimes you’ve got too much else to think about, and want to get a professional to do it for you.
And we’re not all sugar-craft experts! I’ve done my time making gluten free safari park, dinosaur, pink fairies and seahorse cakes for children’s parties, and I know just how difficult it is. No way am I going to be trying to decorate something with as much significance as a wedding cake!
This is a new venture for Pure (aff). They’re offering a “personal, friendly and professional decoration and design service” – and having spoken to Pure when ordering before, I can confirm that they are indeed very friendly and helpful.
I’d be very interested to hear from anyone who has commissioned a gluten free celebration cake, either from Pure or from someone else – how did it go? What was the cake like? Did you get what you wanted?
I’ve written a book summarising what we’ve learnt over 20 years of dealing with the gluten free diet, and it might be just what you’re looking for. It packs the lessons we’ve learned into what I hope is a helpful and straightforward guidebook. It’s available on Amazon, as a paperback or for your Kindle… |

tesco do a gluten free celebration cake and marks and spencers do a gorgeous chocolate and black cherry cake when you can get it
Lucy says
Hi Julie, and thanks for the information. Sometimes there just isn’t time to bake – or to order online – so its good to know where to find something you can find in the high street.

I recently tried Peace of Cake London (www.peaceofcakelondon.com), not only was the service excellent (they made me a birthday cake with only 24 hours notice) but most importantly the cake looked and tasted amazing. I haven’t had a wheat free/gluten free sponge cake that actually tasted spongy for so long it was an absolute pleasure!

Good to know! And they look fab too…
Thanks for sharing the link.

It’s coming up to that time of year again when I have to find a gluten free birthday cake for my Mum and a wheat free one for my husband. Every year I hope Marks and Spencers and/or Waitrose will add a gluten free sponge to their reasonably priced celebration cakes…..and they still haven’t!! Just wanted to share some great websites when I have pushed the boat out!!
http://www.need-a-cake.co.uk/index.aspx – Used these in 2007 and they made a fabulous gluten free cake for my Mum and Dad’s 30th Anniversary and for my husband’s birthday. They tasted DELICIOUS!! and delivered from Reading to Essex!
also
http://www.londoncake.com/ – made our wedding cake, complete with gluten free tier. They don’t deliver unfortunately but also make DELICIOUS cakes!!
Lucy says
Thanks Emma. I can see I’m going to need to develop a special page where people can enter details of good places to find gluten free celebration cakes!

Lucy says
Hi Graham – thanks for adding the link. Gluten free cakes are out there! It’s great to see an ever increasing range available.

Do you know any supermarkets that sell gluten free pasty, shortcrust and puff or a gluten free pastry mix where I can add water.
Lucy says
Hi Marg
Are you in the UK? You can buy frozen gluten free shortcrust pastry at, for example, Sainsbury’s/Tesco/Booths/Waitrose, made by Dietary Specials. I don’t know of anyone that offers gluten free puff pastry, though I think Glutafin have worked out a way of making it (I haven’t tried it, but the link is here: http://www.glutafin.co.uk/recipe/puff-pastry/)
As for a pastry mix, I believe that Orgran and Mrs Crimble both do a pastry mix, and both are available online in various gluten free stores, and maybe in health stores in the high street too. (Ocado will sell the Orgran pastry mix).
I wish I could be more helpful. I buy the Dietary Specials readymade frozen shortcrust pastry…

Does anyone know where I can get a gluten free Birthday cake in North Lincolnshire please?

Does anyone know where I can get a gluten free Birthday cake in North Lincolnshire please?
FreeFrom says
Hi Lisbeth
I haven’t tried any of these cakes, but how about:
Evies Cake Design: http://www.eviescakedesign.co.uk/
Pretty Cake Lady: https://www.facebook.com/PrettyCakeLady
The Lincs Cake Chef: http://thelincscakechef.co.uk/gallery.html
Alternatively, Marks and Spencer are now doing a gluten free birthday cake; and the Tesco victoria sponge is very nice, we think – though it might need to be decorated in ‘birthday style’!
Let me know if you find a good baker in north Lincolnshire…

hi. I need a gluten free celebration birthday cake for my husband’s 70th. He has Ceoliac disease. It cannot be a cake with dried fruits in it as he hates fruit cakes! We live in West Sussex. Any suggestions please?
Lucy says
Hi Ali
Does he like chocolate cake? There’s a very handsome chocolate celebration cake available from Tesco these days. I haven’t tried it, but it looks good (and we do like their other chocolate cakes)

Or, if you want to splash out a bit, how about one of:
Truffles Bakery: http://www.trufflesbakeryltd.co.uk/celebration_cakes.php
Marilyns: http://marilynscakes.co.uk/gallery/celebration-cakes/category/11-celebration-cakes
Cakes with Heart (made by a coeliac): http://www.cakeswithheart.com/home.html
They’re all somewhere in West Sussex, I think…
Do let us know if you find something fabulous!
Ali says
Hi Lucy – Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I will certainly look into both suggestions. Thank you. I do however have one other “tiny” problem in that as with many Coeliacs my husband is also Type 1 Diabetic although this has only come to light in his mid 60’s whereas Type 1 is normally for the young!!! This, of course, makes life doubly hard in that I am always conscious of the sugar content – but as it is for a special occasion and he need only have a very small piece I tend not to worry too much as then it appears as if I am always saying he cannot have treats!!! Have you come across any other Coeliac/Diabetics. When he was first diagnosed we were told it is quite common but we have never met anyone else in this situation???
FreeFrom says
Hi
I too have been told that it is fairly common to have both… I assume you’ve seen the Coeliac UK page but in case somebody else hasn’t seen it and would find it useful (here: https://www.coeliac.org.uk/coeliac-disease/associated-conditions-and-complications/type-1-diabetes/). Then I found this: http://www.delightglutenfree.com/two-diets-one-life-managing-celiac-disease-and-type-1-diabetes. And I don’t know if you do Facebook, but there is an Australian group on there run by a nutritionist: https://www.facebook.com/diabetes.and.coeliac.disease
And finally, I found this: http://doublewhammycook.blogspot.co.uk/ – some of the recipes on there look delicious!
Ali says
Many thanks I will look at the links. We are indeed members of both the Coeliac and Diabetes organisations and often participate in the official collections.
