My coeliac daughter is beginning to feel a bit despondent about breakfast. “There’s nothing to eat …”, she’ll complain.
There is, of course, but she’s bored with the normal range of gluten free breakfast available, so I’ve been looking for an alternative. (If you’re new to living gluten free, and are here because you’re looking for ideas for breakfast, you could try this post about gluten free breakfast).
We’ve just discovered a new breakfast cereal … gluten free granola from Bakery on Main.
No doubt this is familiar to all Americans – but this is the first time I’ve seen it here in the UK, and I found it in Morrison’s. I’m often surprised by our small Morrison’s … they sometimes have very interesting gluten free foods, and sometimes unusual ingredients, too.
We’ve got the Apple, Raisin and Walnut Granola*, but it also comes in Cranberry, Orange and Cashew, or Rainforest (brazils, banana and coconut), Nutty Maple Cranberry or Extreme Fruit and Nut.
I’m not surprised to see that the average review score is 5 out of 5 at Amazon – I think this is a great cereal. I wish someone had started importing it before …

I’ve written a book summarising what we’ve learnt over 20 years of dealing with the gluten free diet, and it might be just what you’re looking for. It packs the lessons we’ve learned into what I hope is a helpful and straightforward guidebook. It’s available on Amazon, as a paperback or for your Kindle… |

I have just returned from the USA and did try some gf granola while I was there (got it from a “Henry’s” health market. I had never had ‘normal’ granola before so don’t know how it compared but I wasn’t that keen on it and found it difficult to eat. Not putting anyone off though as it is probably just my taste.
On the whole I was happy with the range of food that I found available in the health stores but did try about 5 different cereals during my stay and do think I prefer what we have back in Australia. Most of our foods here are available in supermarkets so a bit easier for us to do our shopping.
Did find though that there was also a bigger choice in confectionary there than we have here, even though not labelled gluten free there are more options by ingredients as your manufacturers tend to use a lot more maize ingredients whereas over in Australia we are stuck with the dreaded wheat.

My cookbook, Going Wild in the Kitchen, has a wonderful Hazelnut Granola without wheat and there are many wonderful gluten free recipes in it. Check my blog on Lesliecerier.com and you will find lots of recipes with teff and other gluten free recipes.

Hi Yvonne – perhaps you either are or aren’t a granola person (like Marmite)! I have the impression that there’s a good range of gluten free products in Australia … apart from confectionary, I guess. Do you have to buy all your gluten free products in Australia, or do you get some items on prescription as we do here in the UK?
Leslie, your book looks great – I love to see recipes that are both gluten free and vegetarian.

Hi Lucy,
guess I’m neither a granola or a marmite person, not that I can eat marmite now, but never liked that back in the old days!
We do have to buy all our gluten free products in Australia, there are no items on prescription and no specials or compensation. I don’t know what the pricing is like in the UK but our gluten free products are more expensive than their normal counterparts and usually in lesser amounts. I was very surprised when in America as the food prices are quite reasonable and for $40 US I was able to get quite a lot of items wherease I’d be lucky to get 4 – 6 similar items for $40 AUD.

Marmite is gluten free here in the UK, though I have heard before that it isn’t in Australia. Odd that, though there are other products that are fine to eat here, but not OK elsewhere.
Gluten free products are much, much more expensive here than the normal stuff – and you’re quite right, you get less!
I wonder why it’s cheaper in the US? Perhaps there’s more competition, or the market is bigger?

Hi Justin – looks good! Roll on the day when you’re big enough to export to the UK.
