I discussed the Freebake bread mix that we tried from Freebake in an earlier post, and decided that I would recommend this as a mix.
This weekend we tried the pizza mix, and this was a huge hit.
Again, it would have been easier if the instructions were in the product box, but it wasn’t difficult for my daughter (aged 11) to find the instructions online and print them out. The instructions were clear, and she made a beautiful job of crafting two pizza bases out of the packet of mix. We made two small pizzas rather than one big one because the children couldn’t agree on the appropriate toppings, and one child refused to consider eating pizza that night.
Astonishingly, it made a dough that really would knead – usually we find that purpose made gluten free mixes are batter-style mixes that just need stirring together. Not nearly so satisfying as kneading! And again, the dough rose beautifully, and rolled out well.
It is a double-bake pizza base, so we had to cook the base for a while first, then add the toppings and complete the bake. We ended up with a very convincing thick crust pizza base which tasted very good and was very popular with all three children. Yes, the one who had been stroppy about the thought of pizza came round to the idea once he’d seen the product, and we had to share it out. Luckily, the 400g packet of mix made enough pizza to feed all three of my children with enough left over for the grownups to sample.
Again, a product I would recommend. Not available on prescription, but I wonder whether Freebake are working on this? I know that it can take months for a product to pass all the tests the authorities require before it can be prescribed.
I’ve written a book summarising what we’ve learnt over 20 years of dealing with the gluten free diet, and it might be just what you’re looking for. It packs the lessons we’ve learned into what I hope is a helpful and straightforward guidebook. It’s available on Amazon, as a paperback or for your Kindle… |
